Standing united against community closures

The 14th Assembly of the Uniting Church in Australia has stood as one to oppose the forced closure of remote Aboriginal communities.

The symbolic action was the result of a heartfelt plea by a contingent of youthful members who pleaded with the Assembly to respond to the potential closures.

Stuart McMillan installed as President

Singing with their ‘Hearts on Fire’, children of the Uniting Church in WA began the installation of the incoming President of the Uniting Church in Australia to members and guests of the 14th triennial Assembly, held in Perth this week.

After a welcome to country by Rev. Sealin Garlett, Chair of the Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress WA, youthful representatives shared prayers with the congregation for the vastness of our land, the redness of the Earth, the green plant life, the colours of the earth and the clear white of the creator. Colourful balloons and fabric created a warm backdrop for the moving service.

Welcome Stuart McMillan

Stuart McMillan of Darwin will today be installed as the 14th President of the Uniting Church in Australia (UCA).

Mr McMillan takes up the role after five years as Moderator of the UCA’s Northern Synod in Darwin and more than 30 years working with Aboriginal people in northern Australia.

Uniting Hearts To Warm Perth’s Winter Spirit

Travelling North – Profiling the New President

Six weeks after being interviewed in Sydney for an accountant position at the UCA’s Northern Synod, Stuart McMillan found himself standing alone with his swag on the edge of a dirt airstrip at Ramingining, 560 km east of Darwin.

No one got the message that he was coming. No one knew who he was, and more practically, no one was there to pick him up. So he hitched a ride into the community with some locals.
